Add multiple images to your ad with Multi-Image Extensions

Learn how to add multiple images to make your ads stand out even more with Multi-Image Extensions.

This feature is available to advertisers in the United States. Advertisers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom can request to participate in the beta by contacting their Microsoft Advertising account manager.

Use images to enhance your ads, making them stand out from your competitors. Potential customers are able to see what they’ll get when they click your ad, helping to increase traffic to your site. You can now display five images with Multi-Image Extensions, a unique opportunity available only on Microsoft Advertising.

Multi-Image Extensions

Multi-Image Extensions will appear for the first ad on the mainline only. You can create Multi-Image Extensions with the same tool you use to create Image Extensions, and they can appear with other ad extensions.

Ability to set up in: United States, English only

Serves in: United States, English market only

Layout eligibility: Select at least one type of layout. This lets you choose what kind of Image Extension you want to use for your ads, based on the type of ads you’re creating.

Type of ad When to use it
Single-image search ads We recommend that you enable this Image Extension for ad placements on search results pages, where only one image is shown per ad.
Multi-image search ads We recommend that you enable this Image Extension for ad placements on search results pages, where multiple images are shown per ad.
Note: To be eligible for multi-image placements, you need to have at least 4 Image Extensions with the multi-image layout eligibility selected.
Audience ads We recommend that you enable this Image Extension for ad placements on the Microsoft Audience Network.

What you need to know about Multi-Image Extensionsexpando image

What you need to know:

  • For this extension to serve, a minimum of 5 images must be uploaded and you must select at least 4 Image Extensions to enable Multi-Image Extensions.
  • Multi-Image Extensions work with other extensions, like Sitelink Extensions, in your ad.
  • A maximum of 1,000 campaigns and 1,000 ad groups can have Multi-Image Extensions.
  • Multi-Image Extensions can be used for any keyword. Keep in mind, though, that keywords must be relevant to the images and ad copy. Keywords can include brand, product, and category terms.
  • Reporting data will show in the existing ad extension details report.
  • Multi-Image Extensions' 4:3 ratio images will serve on Microsoft Bing, while other image ratios will be used for Microsoft Audience Ads images. Learn more about Microsoft Audience Ads.

What we recommend:

  • We strongly recommend that you submit customer-ready Display text (required) and Description (optional) for each Multi-Image Extension. The display text will display below the image, while the description may show in future versions of the extension.
    • Display text (required): Maximum of 14 characters
    • Description (optional): Maximum of 100 characters (highly recommended)
  • Provide a URL to be associated with each image (required).
  • While there is no restriction on background colors, we recommend that you avoid using white backgrounds and for .png images, avoid using a transparent background.
Add a Multi-Image Extension expando image

This is important: You must select at least 4 Image Extensions to enable Multi-Image Extensions.

  1. From the main menu on the left, click All campaigns.
  2. From the page menu, click Campaigns or Ad groups.
  3. In the table, click the campaign or ad group you want to add an extension to.
  4. From the page menu, click Ads & extensions.
  5. From the top of the page, click Extensions.
  6. If not already selected, click Image Extensions.
  7. Click Create ad extension > Add new Image Extension.
  8. Enter the Name/Display Text, Description (optional), and Destination URL(optional) of the Image Extension.
  9. To Select your images, you can Select an existing image or your brand logo or Upload new images. Click on the image you want to appear in both Microsoft Bing and MSN, and review the images in Selected images. You can also click on See how your images will look in an ad to get an idea of how your image may appear.
  10. Click Save.
  1. Click Campaigns at the top of the page and click the Ad Extension tab. If not already selected, click Image Extensions.
  2. Click Create ad extension and select the campaign you want to add the Multi-Image Extension to.
  3. Click Create new Image Extension.
  4. Enter the Name/Display Text (required), Description (optional), and Destination URL (required) of the Image Extension. Note: The Name/Display text will appear below the images and must be less than 14 characters.
  5. To Select your images, you can Select an existing image or your brand logo or Upload new images with an image aspect ratio of 4:3. Click on the images you want to appear in Microsoft Bing, and review the images in Selected images. You can also click on See how your images will look in an ad to get an idea of how your images may appear.
  6. Click Save.
Associate a Multi-Image Extension expando image
  1. From the main menu on the left, click All campaigns.
  2. From the page menu, click Campaigns or Ad groups.
  3. In the table, click the campaign or ad group you want to add an extension to.
  4. From the page menu, click Ads & extensions.
  5. From the top of the page, click Extensions.
  6. If not already selected, click Image Extensions.
  7. Click Create ad extension.
  8. From the Available Image Extensions list, select the Image Extension that you want to associate.
  9. Click Save.

  2. Click Create ad extension and select the campaign you want to add the Multi-Image Extension to.
  3. Click Create new Image Extension.
  4. Select the campaign or ad group you want to add the extension to.
  5. Select the images you want to add and click on the >> icon.
  6. Click Save.
How do I associate a Multi-Image Extension at the account level? expando image
  1. From the main menu on the left, click All campaigns.
  2. From the page menu, click Campaigns or Ad groups.
  3. In the table, click the campaign or ad group you want to add an extension to.
  4. From the page menu, click Ads & extensions.
  5. From the top of the page, click Extensions.
  6. If not already selected, click Image Extensions and select Account.
  7. Click Create ad extension.
  8. From the Available Image Extensions list, select the Image Extension that you want to associate.
  9. Click Save.
  1. Click Campaigns at the top of the page.
  2. Click All Campaigns in the left navigation page.
  3. Click the Ad Extensions tab.
  4. If not already selected, click Multi-Image Extension and then Account.
  5. Click Create ad extension.
  6. Select the Multi-Image Extensions you want to add from the Available Multi-Image Extensions list and click the arrow to move it over to the Selected Multi-Image Extensions box.
  7. Click Save.

The requirements for adding an image to an extension are:

  • Accepted file types for images: .jpeg, .png, and .gif (without animation)
  • 4:3 aspect ratio is required for the extension to be eligible to serve on Microsoft Bing.
  • Images must be relevant to the ad and landing page(s).
  • We recommend that the image can also be found on the ad's landing page to ensure relevance.
  • Upload high-resolution images only so they do not pixelate or degrade across screens.
  • Images that are text-only, text-heavy, or contain phone numbers are not permitted.
  • Text that functions as part of a logo is acceptable.
  • For .png images, the recommended best practice is to not use a transparent background.

When you upload an image, it'll automatically be cropped to four preset aspect ratios for your use.

Edit uploaded image: If you're not satisfied with the images auto-cropped into the four aspect ratios, you can upload your own images individually. Just make sure they adhere to the following specifications once they have been manually cropped.

Image dimensions for upload are limited to:

  • Minimum image dimensions: 760 x 400 pixels
  • Maximum image dimensions: 1900 x 1000 pixels
  • Recommended image dimensions: 1200 x 628 pixels
