How do I switch my payment settings?

See how a guided workflow helps you switch how you pay for Microsoft Advertising (be it prepay, postpay threshold, or monthly invoice billing).
Note

Super Admins can change payment settings. Standard Users can also change payment settings, so long as there's a payment method already on file. For more information about user roles, see How do I give someone access to my Microsoft Advertising account?.

Pay now or pay later: You can change your payment setting for Microsoft Advertising. You can switch from a prepay account to a postpay threshold account, and vice versa. If you've met eligibility requirements for monthly invoice billing, you can also switch to and from a monthly invoice account. (Want help on what you pay with instead? See Choosing a payment method for Microsoft Advertising for the complete list of payment methods.)

  1. From the top menu, select Tools > Billing & Payments.

If you're using the new Microsoft Advertising navigation, from the navigation menu on the left, hover over Billing and select Payments.

  2. If you have multiple accounts, choose one from the account selector in the top menu.
  3. In the How you pay tile of Billing Summary, select Change how you pay. If you don't see this, you don't have the correct permissions to make this change. Learn more.
  4. From the list, Choose a new payment setting, and then select Next.
  5. Depending on your chosen payment setting, you may have to settle a balance, carry a balance forward, or setup a payment method.
  6. When you've addressed the open items, move on to the next section and select Make the switch. Then, you'll see a Summary outlining the changes you've made.

Things to keep in mind when you switch payment settings

Switching from Switching to Notes
Prepay Postpay threshold Any prepaid balance remaining on your account will be carried forward as a credit. We'll deduct advertising costs from that credit. Once the balance is exhausted, we'll charge your primary payment method when you hit your payment amount threshold or your monthly billing date, whichever comes first.
Prepay Monthly invoice Any prepaid balance remaining on your account will be carried forward as a credit. We'll apply that credit towards the charges in your next monthly invoice. You should also create an insertion order so that your ads can serve once you switch payment settings.
Postpay threshold Prepay Any amount due must be paid. You should also add prepay funds and enable auto-recharge to help ensure that your account is funded.
Postpay threshold Monthly invoice You can choose to pay any amount due immediately or you can carry it over to your next monthly invoice, so long as the amount is within your credit limit. If the amount due is larger than your credit limit, then you'll need to first settle what you owe in order to switch payment settings.
Monthly invoice Prepay You'll need to pay your final monthly invoice, which will be sent separately once it's ready on the 1st of the following month. You should also add prepay funds and enable auto-recharge to help ensure that your account is funded.
Monthly invoice Postpay threshold You'll need to pay your final monthly invoice, which will be sent separately once it's ready on the 1st of the following month. You'll also need to make sure you have a primary payment method on file (such as a card) to cover postpay charges.
